Enjoying Fall in Pennsylvania

I love the bright red trees.

In the last blog post, I mentioned that Tim and I were tired and wanted to stay in Pennsylvania a bit longer before starting our trek south for the winter. We were fortunate to be able to extend our stay at Thousand Trails Hershey to almost 3 weeks. This campground is very popular in the fall and is fully booked, especially on the weekends. Lucky for us, there were some cancelations so we were initially able to extend our stay to 18 days.

Trent and I enjoy watching the geese on our daily walks. The geese are every where at this campground.

While we are here, we caught up with our friend Has. He has decided to quit living in his trailer and move into an apartment. For the past year, he lived in his fifth wheel for 6 months in Florida, then hired a company to move it to Pennsylvania where he has been for the past 6 months.. Since he has no way to move his trailer, we wanted to see if we could help him out and move it to storage for him. That required us to stay a little longer but the campgrounds around here are booked on the weekends.

We thought we could see if there were any more cancelations and at least get a full 3 weeks here and then see if we could add one more week. Our membership allows for that up to 6 times a year for a minimal cost. The campground has been great and really worked with us to make that happen. They had a few sites reserved for volunteers for their Haunted Trail that they run for the last 3 weekends of October. The person playing a serial killer grandma had to back out so they made us a deal. if I would play Grandma, they could extend our stay. Of course, we took the deal so I have been “working” Friday and Saturday nights playing Grandma. I also helped them with set up before the trail started. It is a lot of fun although I don’t know how scary I am. I think I just surprise the guests when they expect nice Grandma and I talk about capturing Little Red Riding Hood to make Red Stew. I hear many screams from the groups as they walk through the trail so I think some of the other skits are pretty scary.

Aside from working the weekends and having fun with the crowds, we are mostly hanging out here at the park and enjoying the fall weather. Tim has used the time to work on a few projects on the trailer that he has wanted to do for awhile. We have a good bit of storage area underneath the trailer but it is hard to keep it organized so that you can easily find what you need at the time you need it. Tim added some shelves and racks to better organize his tools and the other stuff that we haul with us; simple fixes that will make his life easier. I take daily walks with Trent and help Tim as needed on the projects. We have also found some time to enjoy the amenities at the campground like playing pool or soaking in the indoor hot tub. That is my favorite!

Tim loves to shoot pool so I go with him but I am not very good. He keeps trying to teach this lost cause!

Tim built another shelf to better fit stuff in the front storage bin.

Tim added this tool organizer in the pass through storage and installed the tubes to organize zipties. This way, things he uses often are readily available.

On one rainy day, we decided to visit the Hershey Story Museum which was pretty interesting. The many exhibits covered the life of Milton Hershey and the story of how he became a successful candy maker as well as how he developed the community and town of Hershey, PA. He was a very interesting person and definitely gave back to the community. Of course, we bought some chocolate in the store before we left. Can’t visit Hershey without a treat.

Tim’s college friend Dave lives nearby and we were able to catch up with him and his wife Robin while we were in the area. We met them for dinner at the Quentin Tavern, one of our favorites. We also met them for lunch at the Hershey Hotel on a Sunday. The hotel is worth a visit even if you aren’t staying there. The grounds are beautiful and the lobby is gorgeous. While lunch was delicious, I enjoyed just sitting in the lobby and talking more.

We have one more week here and then we start moving south towards Florida. We have been very fortunate to have good weather so far although it is starting to get fairly cool at night. While Fall in PA can’t be beat, we need to start south before it gets much colder!
