Celebrating National Park Week and Our Trip Eastward

Celebrating National Park Week and Our Trip Eastward

Usually we aren’t anywhere close to a National Park during National Park week but this year we really hit the bonanza. I got to visit Zion and Bryce the week before and then as we left Utah, we headed back to Arizona to visit two more parks during National Park Week. After a quick overnight stop in Vegas, we headed south and east to Williams, AZ for a 3 night stay.

Visiting Magnificent Utah

Visiting Magnificent Utah

After our time in Nevada, we headed further north to Utah to spend a week visiting our friends, Gerry and Mari. We initially met them during our first year traveling in the RV in Berea, KY. We spent a week as neighbors and have kept in touch over the years even though we were in different parts of the country. They settled in St. George, UT two years ago and we were excited that we could finally visit them since it wasn’t too far from Las Vegas.

A Few More Stops in Arizona, Then Onto Nevada

A Few More Stops in Arizona, Then Onto Nevada

While in Verde Valley, we considered a visit to the Grand Canyon by taking the train from Williams, AZ. I realized that it would be a very long day to do that from where we were staying, so we discussed leaving a couple days early and staying in Williams for the train ride. I kept watching the weather since it had been cold and snowing at times up in that area. As we approached our last week in Verde Valley, the weather forecast looked great. Sunny and low 60s for Williams for a couple days in a row. We quickly booked a park in Williams for 2 nights.

From Sea to Shining Sea

From Sea to Shining Sea

We did it! We have completed a full cross country trip. In the past year, we saw the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico while staying in Florida and now we saw the Pacific Ocean in California. I love that our lifestyle is able to take us to so many beautiful places. When we initially planned our winter travels, we were going to spend the winter in Arizona, with 3 months in Tucson and we didn’t think we would make it to California on this trip.

Moving On From Tucson

Moving On From Tucson

We headed a bit further west last week to Yuma, AZ and have now been here for a week. Unfortunately, I started getting a head cold the day we got here and after having it for a week, I am feeling better but Tim now has it. I had to share, right? With both of us being sick, we haven’t done very much yet in Yuma, but we did enjoy our last couple of weeks in Tucson and had a nice stop in Why, AZ on our way here.

So Much to Do, So Little Time

So Much to Do, So Little Time

It is hard to believe that a 2 month visit to Tucson, AZ is not enough to see and do everything that this area has to offer but it is true. We have found many great places to visit in the area and in the city. I suppose that most cities provide many things to do and areas to explore although I feel that often what we find is similar to other cities. So I don’t always feel that we need to do everything that I have read or heard about in the area. This time, my list of what I don’t want to miss keeps growing and I suppose it is because of the abundance of nature and beautiful settings in this area as well as the abundance of history in the area.

Visiting Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico Part 3

Visiting Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico Part 3

After leaving Santa Fe, we headed south on I25 towards Elephant Butte. It was a spectacular drive, especially leaving the Santa Fe area and descending over the buttes; at least that is what I think these rocky ridges are called. It seemed at one point like the earth was opening up to my right with these rocky drop offs to the valley below and mountains in the distance. I couldn’t get any pictures because I was driving the RV but I can still visualize it.

Fall in New Mexico, Part 2

Fall in New Mexico, Part 2

When we first arrived in Santa Fe, we noticed a sign for Madrid as we took our exit for the RV Park. I remembered that town from “Wild Hogs”, a movie that we always enjoy and wondered if it was the same place the movie was filmed. Another sign indicated that the route towards Madrid was the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway. Of course, both of those sounded good to me.

Fall in New Mexico, Part 1

We have now been in New Mexico for about a month and we can officially say that we arrived in the Desert Southwest. So I decided to start a new series of blog posts instead of continuing the westward journey series. After Tucumcari, we headed a little further west and north to Santa Fe. I have to say that this town has been on my bucket list for quite awhile and it certainly met my expectations.

Visiting Oklahoma City, 2023 Westward Journey, Part 2

Visiting Oklahoma City, 2023 Westward Journey, Part 2

After 5 days of traveling, we stopped in Oklahoma City for 3 nights. I am really glad that we stopped here for a few days. Not only did we need a break from driving, we also needed time to relax and enjoy our surroundings. We discovered that there is quite a bit to do in Oklahoma City so we explored different sections of the city each day.

Our 2023 Westward Journey, Part 1

Our 2023 Westward Journey, Part 1

Over the past 1.5 weeks, we traveled from Batesville, IN to Tucumcari, NM. That is pretty fast traveling for us. We normally stay in each stop for a few days to a week with sometimes a one night stop in between our longer stops. Since we got a later start that we originally planned, we decided to move quickly through a few states so we could spend the time we had planned for New Mexico. We ended up with 5 days in a row of travel, with 4 one night stops before we had a 3 night stop.

Camping Neighbors are the Best

Camping Neighbors are the Best

We settled in at Wright’s Orchard Station Campground near Altoona, PA for the summer and are really enjoying the campground and the area. This is a small, quiet campground with friendly people. Since we wanted a site without too many trees overhead, we are in a long, somewhat narrow pie shaped site which works well for us. There is room for the truck in front of the rig and I am able to park my car in front of the office. We have enough space for our chairs, table, and the dog cot in the patio area, with a little grassy area behind us.

A Little Fun Along the Way

A Little Fun Along the Way

Since the last blog post was a bit depressing with all of our medical issues, I thought I needed to write one about having fun. Following Tim’s surgery, we headed back to the RV in Gettysburg. We had lost the couple of weeks that we wanted to spend touring the area so we were left with one full day before we had to leave. In the morning, we headed off to check out the battlefield with the national park visitor’s center as our first stop. There was so much to see and do in the visitor’s center that we could have spent the entire day there.

Chapter Two

Chapter Two

Well chapter two, the second half whatever you want to call it, Deb and I have finished the 24 states east of the Mississippi and are now about to start the remaining 24; those being west of the Mississippi (I know you knew that).  Yes, only 48 states instead of 50. Our goal when we started was to visit the lower 48 states. We do not plan to drive this rig to Alaska; that is just too far for us.

Catching Up

Catching Up

I can’t believe it has been over a month since I wrote a blog post. It feels like time just flew by since I wrote our annual Christmas letter post. We really haven’t been doing much but at the same time, we have been really busy. I guess we were busy not doing much of anything. Do you ever feel that way?

2022 Annual Christmas Letter

2022 Annual Christmas Letter

I can’t believe that 2022 is coming to an end and we are into the holiday season. As we look forward to celebrating Christmas in another week, it is a good time to update everyone on our family instead of just writing about Tim and my adventures.  It has been a busy and exciting year for the Senko family filled with many family gatherings and new family members.

Travel Days and Stormy Weather, Again!

Travel Days and Stormy Weather, Again!

After 3 weeks of travel, we arrived in Florida for the winter. Yes, that is correct, we took 3 weeks to drive from Pennsylvania to Florida. We like to take our time and stay for awhile at most of our stops. No need to rush; we stop and smell the roses along the way. I don’t know about roses, but we did enjoy the fall scenery during our travels.

Enjoying Fall in Pennsylvania

Enjoying Fall in Pennsylvania

In the last blog, I had mentioned that Tim and I were tired and wanted to stay in Pennsylvania a bit longer before starting our trek south for the winter. We were fortunate to be able to extend our stay at Thousand Trails Hershey to almost 3 weeks. This campground is very popular in the fall and is fully booked, especially on the weekends. Lucky for us, there were some cancelations so we were initially able to extend our stay to 18 days.

Celebrating Three Years on the Road

Celebrating Three Years on the Road

Wow, I can’t believe that we have been living in the RV for three years already. We started traveling October 8, 2019, which I initially considered our full-time anniversary date, but we moved into the RV a month earlier, on September 8, 2019. I worked remotely for my last two weeks from the RV while we prepared to start traveling. So which date is the anniversary?

Busy, Busy, Busy

Busy, Busy, Busy

Wow, I can’t believe our month in Pittsburgh has come to an end. We were so busy that the time just flew by and we didn’t get to see everyone that we wanted too. It felt like we spent most of our time running to appointments: various doctors, tests, dentists, vehicle appointments, insurance broker appointments, and more. Fitting all of it into a month was very stressful. We have learned our lesson that a month just isn’t long enough time.. Next year, we plan to spend 4 months here.
